H. 'Earth Angel'

Hosta 'Earth Angel'A nice sized division of this cultivar came our way as a Hosta Secret Trade in June '09. Now another one can be scratched off the wanted-list.

Hosta of the YearOh, forgot to mention, it's Hosta of the Year for 2009!

A few weeks later the edge variegation is slowly turning yellow. It's present location is pretty much in open shade for the whole day.

By early September we can see hints of the onset of senescence but as you can see, the plant established itself nicely over the summer.

Fast forward a couple of years to 2011 and while this division hasn't shown much growth in the number of shoots, it certainly has in terms of overall size. It also flowered this year and I pollinated one flower with pollen off 'Sea Octopus' which was in bloom the same time. Oddly enough only the hand pollinated flower resulted in a pod, there was no open self pollination on this plant, yet the 'Sea Octopus' pollen gave me a nice, big, fat pod. Time will tell if we have viable seed.

I must admit to quite liking the gentle undulations on the larger leaves, we should see more of that next year.

Guestbook use seems to have fallen out of favour, so we have deleted it, but, if there's something you'd like to say, simply use the form on the contact page.
