H. 'Feather Boa'

On June 3rd, 2006 'Feather Boa' became the latest addition to our Hosta collection. We visited a new-to-us nursery that day, spotted it, and had to have it, it's just too cute. To boot it's a very rapid grower apparently, so, the next day it was division time, three were potted up and the fourth one went into the ground in the 'Hosta Nursery'.

Believe it or not, by mid September one of the divisions is actually putting up a flower scape! While the other division is showing signs of senescence already, this one is going strong and I wouldn't be shocked to actually see flowers. But we never did...'cause I cut off the scape.

Early May of '07 and the waviness of the leaves is starting to show nicely. These are sitting in more or less full sun and have coloured up into a nice shade of gold. We should be seeing the first flower scapes developing pretty soon now.

By late June/early July they are in full bloom. They have a very nice, rich colour to them, one of the darkest Hosta flowers we have.

Seems hard to imagine somehow, but in the picture below the one on the left is a division from the one on the right! They are rather different, aren't they? It'll be interesting to see what happens in 2008. Will they stay the way they are shown here or will we see them both more or less like the one on the right, which is what they're supposed to look like? Stay tuned.... The way you see them here you could be forgiven to think they're two different varieties, that's how dissimilar they appear. Yes, I suppose maturity has an impact, but so will light exposure, and with that in mind I'll be sure to give all the divisions I have the same light exposure.

It's early July 2009, and look at this pollinator going to town! This cultivar is a ready bloomer and is fertile.

This is a fairly early riser and is a nice yellow when in the sun, and there's a hint of a blush to the lower part of the petioles.
